In February 2011, the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM) wrote to the West Cumbrian Managing Radioactive Waste Safely Partnership to assert that there was no basis for the views expressed by Professor David Smythe regarding the unsuitability of West Cumbria. CoRWM wrote: “there is presently no credible scientific case to support the contention that all of West Cumbria is geologically unsuitable“.
